By 2030, every New Zealander should have the opportunity to understand and use AI. People and organisations will have clear, accessible pathways to build AI capability. Whānau and community groups will be equipped to navigate AI with confidence. Every learner will be empowered to use AI critically, ethically, and responsibly irrespective of their age, income, location or background.
Who we are
AI Education & Skills Working Group
The AI Education & Skills Working Group brings together educators, technologists, researchers, and community and business leaders from across Aotearoa. We work through five workstreams, each with its own lead and priorities for 2026.

Empowering whānau, caregivers and communities to engage with AI safely, confidently and critically.

Priorities and membership for the tertiary education sector. Details coming soon.

Supporting boards, school leaders and kaiako to govern and use AI safely, responsibly and equitably across schools and kura.
Our Progress
What we’ve achieved so far
- Established the AI Education & Skills Working Group, convening educators, technologists, researchers, and community and business leaders from across Aotearoa.
- Formed five workstreams: Workforce; Services, Resources & Research; Whānau and Community; Tertiary; and Schools and Kura.
- Defined each workstream’s purpose and priority focus areas for 2026, from a national AI education and skills statement to whānau-focused AI literacy.
What’s next
- Lead a cross-sector AI Education & Skills Statement for New Zealand.
- Launch a simple self-assessment tool for gauging AI maturity.
- Curate trusted AI learning resources for New Zealand’s working population.
- Pilot a Whānau & Community podcast series and the Raising Rangatahi in an AI World panel.
- Map the people and organisations supporting AI literacy across Aotearoa.
